Number Observed:
2
Type:
First butterfly of the season
Description/Notes:
After a rainy and cool several days, a bit of sun, with temperatures in the low-mid 60's brought a nice variety of butterflies to the ridge along the Palisades, at Hook Mt., Rockland County (just north of Nyack, on the Hudson). I walked the ridge for a mile + both north & south of the summit and all the sightings were between 3 & 5:15 p.m. - all appeared rather fresh and many probably had emerged with the recent heat that was felt thru the region, while the hairstreak & perhaps the Vanessa spp. (Red Admiral, the ladys) were likely new migrants. A dragonfly (Anax junius, Green Darner) was also flying & a number of spring wildflowers were in bloom, including some of the cresses the Falcate Orangetips like to use. Wed., May 6th, 2009.
