Description/Notes:
At least two individuals were spotted and photographed at Grammer Grove Park, Marshall County, IA. IDs were confirmed with the Kaufman butterfly book, with large eye spots on the underside of the hindwing, the distinctive white spot near the margin of the forewing, the "smear" of eyespots on the inside hindwing, and the smaller black spot on the forewing (in contrast to V. cardui). The butterflies were visiting spring woodland wildflowers, notably Spring Beauty (Claytonia virginiana) and False Rue Anemone (Enemion biternatum), as well as Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale). Location precision: within a 10m radius. Survey from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. CDT. Observed by compassplant, Vanessa Migration Project page, iNaturalist. https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/23030379
