York, Maine. Location precision: estimated within a 5 km radius. Observed by Judy Goodell. "I read about your study in Xerces Society Gardening With Butterflies book today. I am forwarding photos taken in my yard on May 22 at 11:11 AM. I live in rural York, Maine and this " flock" of Red Admirals were nectaring on my Korean spicebushes( 3 of them and very large bushes) - I would estimate there were dozens. They were evidently migrating as the next day, they were all gone. I was thrilled to be able to identify them from the photos in my Butterflies of New England book.
A year ago in Northern Maine at our camp I saw my one and only ever White Admiral butterfly. This year at camp, I saw and identified Dreamy Duskywing and Spring Azure ( which live and mate only 4 days). We have many monarchs and Painted Ladys in our gardens and I saw my first Question Mark in Portsmouth, NH last week( was able to get a good identifying photo. )
This is all a new avid interest of mine now- so fascinating to learn about these magical creatures. I do hope to see an American Lady sometime. I hope this sighting of the Red Admirals helps with your study. Judy Goodell
