Cape Race/Cape Race Lighthouse, Newfoundland. Observation by Jeff Harrison, nf.insects Newsgroup. Location precision: estimated within a 300m radius. "Weather has been very poor of late with low temperatures and an extraordinary amount of fog. "The big news this year is certainly the large number of Painted Ladies. On the narrow stretch between the pond and the road at The Drook on August 26th I had at least 10 together nectaring on knapweed. They all looked quite fresh. There were also 4 at Cape Race that day with a blue, presumably a Northern Blue. Prior to that they have been encountered in good numbers just about everywhere. "Abundant this year was hundreds of Northern Blues on the barrens in early August near Bristol Cove River in the Mistaken Point Ecological Reserve and to the west at St Shotts near the fog horn station. "I also had two Silver-bordered Fritillaries on the barrens behind Biscay Bay on August 22nd. "Have not seen a Red Admiral for weeks. Expect that a few of the next generation will show up before we leave in early September." Jeff Harrison
